Montefalco/Bevagna

From the resort, at the other side of the valley, the cities of Montefalco and Bevagna make a perfect excursion for strolling through mediaeval cities and seeing some wonderful local crafts and products.

Montefalco is situated on a mountain top vantage point with panoramic views of the entire valley. Walking through the streets there are shops that offer products such as local wines, olive oils, lentils, jams, spices and cheeses. Montefalco is best known for linens, beautiful table cloths napkins and other linen products have been crafted locally for centuries.

The church of Saint Francis, which is now the town’s museum, and given it’s collection of art and artifacts, one of the most important museums in Umbria.  The church is notable for its fresco cycle on the life of Saint Francis from the florentine artist Benozzo Ozzoli, 1450-1452.  Other artists represented in the small museum include Perugino, Melanzio, Pier Antonio Mezzastris and Tiberio d’Assisi.

Bevagna is another mediaeval city, beautifully restored.  the history of bevagna is traceable to the roman times when it was a military post and artifacts are prevalent throughout the city’s architecture including a fragment column in the main piazza and many other fragments integrated into the construction of the main church.  also bevagna is known for wonderful local products, including candles and cashmere to name a couple. For an excursion there are options.  it can be integrated into other stops such as a winery or an excursion in itself.  the bus ride from the resort is about 30 minutes across the spoleto valley.
